Explanation of the Reaction

When magnesium is heated while being surrounded by oxygen, the chemical equation is 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO. We know oxygen was added because the mass of the heated solid increased, and only oxygen (excluding other gases in the air) was present around the magnesium.
The ratio of oxygen to magnesium in the experiment was ≈ 0.07 (which can be rounded to 1), and since both elements create 2 bonds, it makes the most sense to have 1 magnesium atoms bond with 1 oxygen atom, giving us 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO.
